Howard Hughes Medical Institute is one of the nation's largest philanthropies dedicated to supporting research and science education. ![]() We will provide examples of such resources that illustrate how our application is grounded in the classroom but also enables new connections across scientific disciplines. We work directly with teachers to develop specific lesson plans targeted to a variety of high school and middle school science classes. The application is a launching platform for classroom resources and inquiry based activities. The result is an interactive tool that instructors can use to draw connections between traditionally separated fields of biology and geology and to illustrate key concepts of scale and geologic time. To those reconstructions we added a variety of data layers including atmospheric CO2 and O2, temperature, biodiversity indices and discrete events (mass extinctions, impact events, critical fossil markers, etc.,). For example, what is the relationship between plate tectonics and carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations in the atmosphere and how is that reflected in biological diversity? Grounded firmly in primary literature, the application is based on continental reconstructions dating to the Archean eon. Our application, called Earth Viewer, explores the history of the Earth and emphasizes connections between planetary and biological evolution. ![]() With these crosscutting concepts in mind we developed an interactive iPad application that seeks to build bridges across themes in biological and geological sciences. Move in all directions by press and drag the map or you can use the left, right, top, down buttons. Zoom in or zoom out with scroller or with the + and buttons. Find your new travel destination by searching for a country, city and even a street name. They are broad concepts that link across multiple domains of science and include: patterns, similarity, and diversity cause and effect scale, proportion and quantity systems and system models energy and matter structure and function stability and change. You are ready to travel Earth View Maps is the first stop for every travel explorer. Since teachers play a pivotal role in launching the careers of future scientists and in helping the public understand the beauty and import of science, the BioInteractive team partners with the teaching community to create and distribute media that is engaging and relevant to the science curriculum.Crosscutting concepts represent one of the three principal dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards. HHMI's BioInteractive initiative opens a window on cutting-edge science through interactive web features, short films, virtual labs, and scientific animations. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a non-profit medical research organization that ranks as one of the nation's largest philanthropies. Animations between globe and flat map projections. Clickable details on geologic eons, eras, and periods. In-depth features on major geological and biological events in Earth history. Locations of modern cities tracked back over 500 million years. Global temperature maps for the last 100+ years. Sea level maps for the last 21, 000 year and for 8, 000 years into the future. 1, 2015 (bottom left corner) is Soyuz TMA-15M which carried NASA astronaut Terry Virts, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti and Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov to the ISS back in November 2014 and will remain until May 2015. EarthViewer features include: Continental reconstructions and accompanying data dating back billions of years. ISS043E080914 () - This Earth view from the International Space Station Apr. Layer your view of shifting continents with data on atmospheric composition, temperature, biodiversity, day length, and solar luminosity, to get a more complete view of our dynamic planet. Follow a favorite landmark, be it Greenland or New York City, as its position shifts through time, or watch a famous fossil like Tiktaalik make an incredible journey from its origin to its current location. ![]() Based on the latest scientific research, it lets you scroll through the last 4.5 billion years with your fingertips. What did Earth's continents and oceans look like 250 million years ago, or even 1 billion years ago? What do we know about the climate back when our planet formed? How has sea level changed since the melting of the last ice age and what does the future hold? EarthViewer is like a time machine for exploring Earth's deep history. ![]()
